Here are Some Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the minimum age for renting from you?
We try to work with customers who are 25 years and older because of our insurance policy restrictions. On the other hand, based upon your circumstances, whenever possible, we always try to be accommodating.
In case you are younger than 25 years, consider checking in with your insurance provider to see if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Are you able to accommodate families with kids?
Absolutely! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb a little ladder. If this is a problem, we also provide an extra tent with all of our packages which you may set up on the ground beside your camping vehicle. This could be more suitable for both you as well as your young children.
What is the max. capacity of your vehicles?
We could accommodate 3 individuals at most, though if there are more in your party, we do have an additional camping tent, too. With this, we are able to allow for as much as 5 people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
Are you able to provide surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Simply let us know in advance if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we receive a guidebook or a map with the greatest hiking trails and beaches to explore on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out & go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to go to any beach for camping?
You could go to any beach, but you can only set up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We will provide you with a list of the top places to check out and also to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” permitted or can we only visit designated camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You may only go camping in designated areas with a current camping permit. The charge is roughly $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county parks, though private campsites could be a bit more. One advantage of these campgrounds is that you have total access to amenities, like showers, restrooms & picnic dining tables. Please remember that if you choose to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is definitely a better to obtain your Kauai camping license before your arrival. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits on the internet and also on-the-spot in the designated office.
If you decide to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
In advance, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, it isn’t necessary to reserve your camping licenses prior to your planned arrival. You can also get them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
Whether you choose to go to a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to go to a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite some time to get your permits. You might get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on the island; in-person you will receive them on the spot.
