FAQs
Are there any age restrictions to rent from you?
We would rather like to do business with customers who are actually twenty-five years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. However, based on your circumstances, whenever we can, we always strive to be accommodating.
If you are below twenty-five, consider checking with your insurance company to determine if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Are your rooftop tents kids friendly?
Indeed! Please note that using our rooftop campers you will need to climb up one small ladder. If this is an issue, we offer an additional tent with every package which you could put up on the ground beside your camping vehicle. This could be more convenient for you and also your young children.
What is the maximum capacity of your trucks?
The camping trucks sleep three people maximum, although if there are more within your party, we do offer an additional camping tent, too. With this, we can easily allow for about five people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
Do you have surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and also fins on request for a small fee. Just let us know in advance if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a guide or perhaps a map with the best hiking trails & beaches to visit on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to visit and camp out on Kauai.
Top Locations For Camping On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to go to any beach front for camping?
You could go to any beach, but you should only put up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the standard practice here on Kauai. We’ll supply you with a list of the top locations to visit and to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or are we only able to go to designated camping grounds? If so, how much is the charge?
No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You should only camp in official areas with a valid camping permit. The fee is roughly $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, but private campgrounds could be a little more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have full access to amenities, such as showers, bathrooms and picnic tables. Please be aware that if you decide to go camping on the county campsites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It is a better to organize your Kauai camping license before your journey. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses online and also in person in the designated office.
If you choose to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
In advance, the fees are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. But it isn’t absolutely necessary to reserve your camping permits prior to your arrival. You may also obtain them at the different permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
No matter if you decide to camp at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite some time to obtain your permits. Permits can be obtained at the permit offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given on the spot.
