Here are Some Commonly Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We prefer to work with customers who are actually 25 years and older due to our insurance policy restrictions. But, based upon your circumstances, whenever possible, we always try to be accommodating.
If you are younger than twenty-five, consider checking with your insurance company to determine if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.
Would you be able to accommodate adults with kids?
Absolutely! Please note that with our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb one small ladder. If this is a concern, we offer an extra tent with each package which you could put up on the ground next to the camping vehicle. This could be more suitable for both you and your children.
What is the maximum capacity of your camper vehicles?
Our camping vehicles fit 3 people maximum, although in case there are more in your group, we do provide an additional tent, as well. With this, we can easily accommodate up to 5 individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards and also fins upon request for a small fee. Just tell us up-front if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a guide or perhaps a map with the nicest locations to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to see and go camping on Kauai.
Perfect Locations For Camping Out On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I head to any beach front to camp?
You could drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the best places to visit and to camp in. Please note that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or can we just visit official camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping is not permitted in Kauai. You should only go camping in designated areas with a current camping permit. The associated fee is roughly $3 per night stay in many Kauai county parks, but private camp sites may be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you will have full access to amenities, like showers, bathrooms & picnic tables. Please remember that if you choose to camp on the county campsites, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is a good idea to get your Kauai camping permits prior to your journey. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses online and also in person in the respective office.
If you decide to stay at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you may obtain permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
In advance, the fees are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, you don’t necessarily have to book your camping permits prior to your planned arrival. You could also get them at the different permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
How long does it take to obtain the camping permits?
No matter if you decide to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to camp at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite a while to get your permits. Permits can be bought at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given on-the-spot.
