Commonly Asked Questions

Is there an age requirement to rent from you?

We try to work with clients who are actually 25 years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. Nevertheless, based upon your needs, whenever possible, we strive to be flexible.

If you are below 25 years, try checking in with your insurance provider to see if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.

Are your roof top tent campers kids friendly?

Certainly! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb a small ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we offer an additional tent with each of our packages which you can put up on the ground. This may be more comfortable for both you and your little ones.

What is the maximum capacity of your camper trucks?

The camper vehicles fit three people at most, though if there are more in your group, we do provide an additional tent, as well. With this, we can easily accommodate as much as 5 individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.

Do you have surfboards?

Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Just tell us beforehand if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Can we get a travel guide or a map with the best hiking trails and beaches to check out on Kauai?

Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to check out & camp out on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Information About Camping Permits

Can I head to any beach for camping?

You may drive up to any beach, however, you should only set up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We’ll supply you with a list of the best locations to check out and to go camping. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.

Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we only visit official camping grounds? If so, how much is the cost?

No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only go camping in specific areas with secured camping permits. The fee is around $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, but private camping grounds could be a little more. One advantage of these camping grounds is that you will have total access to facilities, such as showers, bathrooms & picnic dining tables. Please keep in mind that if you choose to camp on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Can you suggest any Kauai camping sites where we can set up the roof top tent?

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?

It’s a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license before your trip. For the majority of private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses on the internet and also in person in the respective office.

If you decide to camp at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you may obtain permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.

Non-residents must pay 3 dollars per night up-front. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are bank checks as well as money orders. However, you don’t necessarily have to reserve your camping permits before your planned arrival. You could also get them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.

How long will it take to obtain the camping permits?

If you decide to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to obtain your permits. You might obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them on the spot.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
