Below are Some Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age for renting from you?
We would rather like to work with clients who are 25 years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. On the other hand, depending on your needs, whenever possible, we strive to be accommodating.
If you are below 25 years, consider checking in with your insurer to find out whether you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Could you accommodate families with kids?
Of course! Please note that using our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb a small ladder. If this is a problem, we also provide an additional camping tent with each package which you may set up on the ground. This may be more comfortable for both you and your children.
How many individuals can your camper trucks fit?
We can accommodate 3 people maximum, though in case there are more within your group, we do have an additional tent, too. With this, we are able to accommodate as much as 5 people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
Do you offer surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins on request for a fee. Simply tell us beforehand if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a guidebook or even a map with the best areas to explore on Kauai?
Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit and go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Information About Camping Permits
Am I able to go to any beach front to camp?
You can drive up to any beach, but you should only set up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We’ll provide you with a list of the best locations to explore and also to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” permitted or can we only go to designated camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You should only go camping in specific areas with secured camping permits. The fee is around $3 per night stay in many Kauai county parks, though private camp sites may be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you will have full access to facilities, like washrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you choose to camp on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is definitely a better to obtain your Kauai camping license before your trip. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may secure your permits online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you decide to camp at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you can request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
In advance, the costs are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. But it is not absolutely necessary to reserve your camping permits prior to your planned arrival. You could also obtain them at the various permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
If you decide to camp at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to obtain your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given on-the-spot.
