Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits
Can I visit any beach front to camp?
You can drive up to any beach, nevertheless, you can only set up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We will give you a list of the top places to explore and also to go camping. Please be aware that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or can we just visit designated camping grounds? If so, how much is the cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed in Kauai. You may only go camping in specific locations with a current camping permit. The charge is around $3 per night in most Kauai county campgrounds, but private campsites may be a little more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you have full access to facilities, such as restrooms, showers and picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you choose to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It’s a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license before your trip. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you opt to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
Up-front, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are bank checks and also money orders. However, it isn’t absolutely necessary to book your camping licenses before your planned arrival. You can also get them at the various permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
How long will it take to obtain the camping permits?
Whether you decide to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite a while to get your permits. You might obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the various permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will get them on the spot.

Our Happy Clients!
Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.
Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.
We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
The BEST way to experience the beautiful garden island! Not only a great service–transportation doubling as your lodging–but wonderful and warm hosts. Jonathan and Jamie were so kind and helpful. An absolutely wonderful trip to Kauai–thank you both!
