Commonly Asked Questions

Is there a minimum age for renting from you?

We prefer to do business with clients who are 25 years and older because of our insurance policy restrictions. Having said that, based upon your circumstances, whenever we can, we strive to be flexible.

If you are below 25 years, try checking with your insurance company to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.

Are you able to accommodate adults with children?

Of course! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb up a small ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we provide an extra camping tent with each of our packages which you can put up on the ground beside the camping truck. This could be more suitable for you and also your young ones.

What is the maximum capacity of your vehicles?

We could fit three individuals maximum, though in case there are more in your group, we do provide an extra camping tent, as well. With this, we can easily allow for as much as 5 people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.

Are you offering surfboards?

Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a fee. Just tell us up-front if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we receive a guidebook or even a map with the nicest beaches and hiking trails to check out on Kauai?

Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to visit & go camping on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits

Can I head to any beach front for camping?

You can drive up to any beach, however, you can only put up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We’ll give you a list of the top locations to explore and to go camping. Please be aware that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.

Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we only able to go to designated camping sites? If so, how much is the charge?

No, wild camping is not permitted on the island of Kauai. You can only camp in designated areas with secured camping permits. The associated fee is roughly $3 per night in most Kauai county parks, but private campgrounds may be a little more. One advantage of these camping grounds is that you will have complete access to amenities, like bathrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please keep in mind that if you opt to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

What camping grounds do you recommend with the rooftop tent?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.
  • YMCA of Kaua’i (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4477 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766
  • Kumu Camp: Anahola Beach Retreat (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4275 Poha Rd, Anahola, HI 96703
  • Camp Nau’e YMCA (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 7420 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei, Kauai, HI 96714
  • Camp Slogget operated by YWCA Kaua’i in stunning Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): get directions from their website https://ywcakauai.org/camp-sloggett
  • Camp Hale Koa – private campground in Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): this is for larger groups only, for more information, please visit their website http://camphalekoa.com

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?

It is a better to get your Kauai camping permits before your journey. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may secure your permits online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.

If you choose to camp at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you can request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.

In advance, the fees are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. However, it is not absolutely necessary to book your camping permits prior to your planned arrival. You can also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.

What is the processing time for getting camping permits?

If you choose to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to go to a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to receive your permits. You may opt to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will receive them right away.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
