Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age for renting from you?
We would rather like to work with customers who are actually 25 years and above because of our insurance policy restrictions. However, depending on your situation, whenever we can, we always try to be accommodating.
If you are below 25 years, consider checking in with your insurance provider to find out whether you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.
Are you able to accommodate families with kids?
Yes! Please note that with our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb a little ladder. If this is a problem, we provide an extra camping tent with each package which you can easily put up on the ground beside the camping vehicle. This may be more comfortable for both you and your young children.
How many people can your camping vehicles fit?
We could accommodate 3 individuals at most, though in case there are more in your group, we do provide an additional camping tent, as well. With this, we can easily accommodate up to 5 individuals. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards and also fins on request for a fee. Simply tell us in advance if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a guide book or a map with the nicest areas to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit & camp out on Kauai.
Greatest Locations For Camping On Kauai & Information About Camping Permits
Am I able to head to any beach front for camping?
You may drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in official camping sites. This is the standard practice here on Kauai. We’ll provide you with a list of the ideal places to explore and also to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or can we only visit designated camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You can only go camping in specific locations with a current camping permit. The charge is around $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, though private campsites could be a little more. One advantage of these campsites is that you will have full access to amenities, like washrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you decide to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is a better to organize your Kauai camping license before your trip. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits on the internet and also in person in the designated office.
If you opt to camp at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you may request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
In advance, the charges are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are bank checks and money orders. But you don’t necessarily have to reserve your camping permits before your planned arrival. You could also obtain them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
How long will it take to get the camping permits?
If you decide to camp at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to stay at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to get your permits. Permits can be bought at the permit offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are issued on the spot.

Our Happy Clients!
Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.
Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.
We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
The BEST way to experience the beautiful garden island! Not only a great service–transportation doubling as your lodging–but wonderful and warm hosts. Jonathan and Jamie were so kind and helpful. An absolutely wonderful trip to Kauai–thank you both!
