FAQs

Are there any age restrictions to rent from you?

We would rather like to do business with customers who are actually 25 years and older due to our insurance policy restrictions. On the other hand, depending on your needs, whenever we can, we strive to be flexible.

If you are below twenty-five, try contacting your insurance provider to see if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.

Are your roof top tents family friendly?

Yes! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb up a small ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we offer an extra tent with each of our packages which you can put up on the ground beside the camper vehicle. This could be more suitable for you and also your little ones.

How many individuals can your camping vehicles fit?

We could fit 3 people at most, though in case there are more in your party, we do have an extra camping tent, as well. With this, we are able to accommodate about five people. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.

Do you have surfboards?

Absolutely yes, we provide both surfboards and boogie boards and fins on request for a small fee. Just tell us beforehand if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we receive a guide book or even a map with the greatest locations to explore on Kauai?

Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to visit and camp out on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ

Can I go to any beach front for camping?

You can drive up to any beach, but you can only set up your camp in designated camping grounds. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We will give you a list of the top places to check out and also to go camping. Please be aware that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” permitted or can we only visit designated camping grounds? If so, what is the fee?

No, wild camping is not permitted in Kauai. You may only go camping in specified areas with secured camping permits. The charge is about $3 per night in most Kauai county campgrounds, though private camping grounds may be a little more. The good thing about these campgrounds is that you will have complete access to amenities, such as showers, bathrooms and picnic kitchen tables. Please note that if you opt to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

What campgrounds do you suggest with the rooftop tent?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.
  • YMCA of Kaua’i (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4477 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766
  • Kumu Camp: Anahola Beach Retreat (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4275 Poha Rd, Anahola, HI 96703

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?

It’s a good idea to obtain your Kauai camping permits before your trip. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your licenses online and also in person in the designated office.

If you choose to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.

Up-front, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are bank checks and money orders. Nevertheless, it isn’t absolutely necessary to reserve your camping licenses prior to your arrival. You could also get them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.

How much time will it take to obtain the camping permits?

If you decide to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to receive your permits. Permits can be obtained at the permit offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are issued on the spot.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
