Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age for renting from you?
We would rather like to work with customers who are 25 years and older because of our insurance coverage restrictions. Nevertheless, based on your situation, whenever we can, we try to be flexible.
In case you are younger than 25 years, consider checking with your insurance company to see if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.
Could you accommodate adults with children?
Yes! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb a small ladder. If this sounds like a concern, we also provide an extra tent with each of our packages which you could put up on the ground. This may be more convenient for both you and also your children.
What is the maximum capacity of your camper trucks?
The camping vehicles sleep three people at most, although if there are more in your group, we do offer an extra tent, too. With this, we are able to fit up to five people. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a fee. Simply inform us beforehand if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a guidebook or a map with the best places to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to visit and camp out on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I go to any beach front for camping?
You could drive up to any beach, but you should only set up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We’ll provide you with a list of the ideal locations to check out and to go camping. Please be aware that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we only visit designated camping sites? If so, how much is the fee?
No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You should only camp in designated areas with secured camping permits. The associated fee is approximately $3 per night in most Kauai county parks, though private campgrounds could be a bit more. One advantage of these campgrounds is that you have full access to amenities, such as restrooms, showers & picnic dining tables. Please note that if you opt to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?
It’s a better to get your Kauai camping permits prior to your trip. For the majority of private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may secure your permits online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you choose to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you can ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Up-front, the charges are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are bank checks and money orders. Nevertheless, it isn’t necessary to reserve your camping licenses before your planned arrival. You can also obtain them at the various permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
How long does it take to get the camping permits?
Whether you decide to go to a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to camp at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite a while to get your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are issued on the spot.
