Best Places For Camping On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to visit any beach front for camping?
You could drive up to any beach, nevertheless, you can only put up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We will supply you with a list of the greatest locations to explore and also to go camping. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we just go to official camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted on the island of Kauai. You may only camp in official locations with a valid camping permit. The associated fee is about $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, though private campsites may be a bit more. One particular advantage of these campsites is that you have full access to facilities, like showers, restrooms and picnic tables. Please keep in mind that if you opt to camp on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It’s a better to obtain your Kauai camping permits before your trip. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you choose to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
In advance, the costs are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are bank checks and money orders. But you don’t necessarily have to reserve your camping permits prior to your arrival. You could also get them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
How long does it take to obtain the camping permits?
No matter if you decide to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to camp at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to get your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given on-the-spot.
