Greatest Places For Camping Outdoors On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ

Am I able to head to any beach to camp?

You can drive up to any beach, nevertheless, you should only set up your camp in official camping sites. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We will give you a list of the ideal locations to check out and to camp in. Please remember that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” permitted or are we only able to visit designated camping grounds? If so, how much is the fee?

No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only camp in specified locations with a current camping permit. The associated fee is around $3 per night in many Kauai county campgrounds, though private campgrounds may be a little more. One advantage of these camping grounds is that you will have full access to facilities, like showers, restrooms and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you decide to camp on the county camp sites, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is a better to obtain your Kauai camping permits before your arrival. For the majority of private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses online and also in person in the respective office.

If you choose to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.

Non-residents must pay three dollars per night in advance. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, it is not necessary to book your camping permits before your arrival. You could also obtain them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.

What is the processing time for getting camping permits?

No matter whether you choose to stay at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to camp at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to get your permits. You might get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will receive them on the spot.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
