Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an age requirement to rent from you?

We would rather like to do business with clients who are 25 years and older due to our insurance policy restrictions. Nevertheless, depending on your needs, whenever we can, we always try to be accommodating.

If you are below 25 years, try checking with your insurance provider to determine if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.

Are your roof top tents family friendly?

Indeed! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb a small ladder. If this is a concern, we also provide an extra camping tent with each of our packages which you can easily set up on the ground. This can be more comfortable for both you and also your kids.

What is the max. capacity of your camper trucks?

We can accommodate 3 individuals at most, although if there are more in your party, we do provide an additional tent, too. With this, we can easily accommodate as much as 5 people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.

What about surfboards?

Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins on request for a small fee. Just inform us beforehand if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we receive a guide book or a map with the greatest hiking trails & beaches to explore on Kauai?

Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out & camp out on Kauai.

Greatest Places For Camping Out On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ

Can I visit any beach front to camp?

You may go to any beach, however, you can only set up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the top locations to explore and to go camping. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” permitted or are we only able to visit official camping sites? If so, how much is the fee?

No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You may only go camping in designated locations with secured camping permits. The associated fee is approximately $3 per night in many Kauai county parks, though private campgrounds may be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you will have full access to facilities, like washrooms, showers and picnic dining tables. Please remember that if you choose to go camping on the county campsites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is a good idea to get your Kauai camping license before your journey. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may get your permits online and also on-the-spot in the designated office.

If you choose to camp at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you can obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.

In advance, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are cashier’s checks and also money orders. However, you don’t necessarily have to reserve your camping permits before your arrival. You can also get them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.

What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?

No matter whether you decide to camp at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to go to a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite a while to receive your permits. Permits can be bought at the license offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given right away.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
