Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any age restrictions to rent from you?
We try to work with customers who are 25 years and above due to our insurance coverage restrictions. Nevertheless, based upon your situation, whenever possible, we always try to be flexible.
In case you are younger than twenty-five, try checking in with your insurance provider to see if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Are your roof top tents kids friendly?
Indeed! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb a little ladder. If this is an issue, we provide an additional tent with all of our packages which you can set up on the ground beside the camper truck. This may be more comfortable for you as well as your kids.
What is the max. capacity of your trucks?
We can fit three people maximum, though if there are more within your group, we do provide an additional tent, as well. With this, we are able to allow for as much as five people. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins on request for a fee. Just tell us beforehand if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a guide or perhaps a map with the best beaches & hiking trails to visit on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to see & go camping on Kauai.
Greatest Places For Camping On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I head to any beach front to camp?
You may drive up to any beach, however, you should only set up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We’ll give you a list of the greatest locations to explore and also to go camping. Please be aware that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we only visit official camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only go camping in designated locations with a current camping permit. The charge is approximately $3 per night in most Kauai county parks, though private camping grounds may be a little more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you have complete access to amenities, like restrooms, showers & picnic dining tables. Please note that if you choose to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is a good idea to get your Kauai camping license prior to your trip. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may get your permits on the internet and also in person in the designated office.
If you opt to camp at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you can ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Non-residents have to pay three dollars per night up-front. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders and cashier’s checks. However, you don’t necessarily have to book your camping licenses prior to your planned arrival. You can also obtain them at the different permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
How long does it take to get the camping permits?
No matter whether you choose to stay at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to camp at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to receive your permits. You might choose to obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the various permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them immediately.
