FAQs
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We prefer to work with clients who are actually twenty-five years and older due to our insurance coverage restrictions. Nevertheless, based on your needs, whenever we can, we always try to be accommodating.
In case you are below 25 years, try checking in with your insurance provider to see if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Would you be able to accommodate adults with kids?
Absolutely! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb up a small ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we also offer an additional tent with every package which you can easily set up on the ground. This may be much more comfortable for both you as well as your little ones.
How many people can your camping vehicles accommodate?
Our camper vehicles fit 3 people at most, though if there are more within your party, we do have an additional tent, as well. With this, we can easily allow for up to 5 people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a small fee. Simply let us know up-front if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a travel guide or perhaps a map with the best locations to explore on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out & camp out on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to visit any beach front to camp?
You may drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We will provide you with a list of the top places to explore and also to go camping. Please remember that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or are we only able to visit official camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You may only camp in designated areas with secured camping permits. The associated fee is around $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, but private campsites may be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you have total access to amenities, like showers, restrooms and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you decide to camp on the county camp sites, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It is definitely a good idea to organize your Kauai camping permits before your trip. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you opt to camp at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
In advance, the costs are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are money orders & cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, it is not absolutely necessary to book your camping permits before your planned arrival. You could also get them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
Whether you decide to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to camp at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to get your permits. You might choose to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the various permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will get them right away.
