Below are Some Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any age limits to rent from you?
We prefer to work with clients who are 25 years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. On the other hand, based on your situation, whenever possible, we try to be flexible.
In case you are below twenty-five, try checking with your insurer to find out whether you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.
Are your roof top tents kids friendly?
Absolutely! Please note that using our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb a small ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we also provide an extra tent with every package which you may set up on the ground. This may be more comfortable for both you and also your little ones.
How many individuals can your camping vehicles fit?
We can fit 3 people at most, although in case there are more in your party, we do offer an additional tent, too. With this, we can easily fit as much as five people. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and fins upon request for a small fee. Just inform us in advance if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a guide or perhaps a map with the best places to explore on Kauai?
Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit and camp out on Kauai.
Best Places For Camping Outdoors On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I go to any beach to camp?
You can drive up to any beach, but you should only put up your camp in designated camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We will supply you with a list of the greatest places to explore and also to camp in. Please remember that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or can we only visit designated camping grounds? If so, what is the cost?
No, wild camping is not permitted in Kauai. You should only go camping in official areas with a current camping permit. The fee is around $3 per night stay in many Kauai county parks, but private campgrounds could be a bit more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you have total access to facilities, like showers, washrooms and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you decide to go camping on the county campsites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.
Could you suggest any Kauai campsites where I can set up the roof top tent?

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is a better to obtain your Kauai camping license prior to your trip. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits online and also in person in the designated office.
If you decide to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
In advance, the costs are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this application are bank checks as well as money orders. But it is not absolutely necessary to reserve your camping permits before your planned arrival. You could also get them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
Whether you decide to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to get your permits. Permits can be obtained at the permit offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given on-the-spot.
