Commonly Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We try to work with clients who are actually 25 years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. But, based on your situation, whenever we can, we strive to be accommodating.
If you are younger than twenty-five, try contacting your insurer to determine if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are your roof top tent camping trucks kids friendly?
Yes! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb one small ladder. If this is a concern, we also provide an additional camping tent with each package which you can easily set up on the ground beside the camper truck. This could be much more comfortable for you as well as your young ones.
What is the maximum capacity of your camper vehicles?
Our camper trucks fit three individuals maximum, although in case there are more in your party, we do have an extra camping tent, as well. With this, we are able to allow for up to 5 individuals. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
Do you have surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins on request for a fee. Just tell us up-front if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a guidebook or perhaps a map with the best places to explore on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out & camp out on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I go to any beach front for camping?
You can go to any beach, but you should only put up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We’ll give you a list of the top locations to visit and also to camp in. Please remember that driving on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we just visit designated camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You may only go camping in designated areas with a valid camping permit. The associated fee is about $3 per night in most Kauai county campgrounds, but private campsites may be a little more. One particular advantage of these camping grounds is that you have complete access to facilities, such as showers, restrooms and picnic dining tables. Please remember that if you decide to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is a better to get your Kauai camping license before your trip. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you may get your permits on the internet and also in person in the designated office.
If you decide to camp at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you can ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Non-residents have to pay three dollars per night up-front. Accepted payment methods with this application are cashier’s checks and money orders. Nevertheless, it isn’t absolutely necessary to book your camping permits before your planned arrival. You could also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
Whether you choose to stay at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to stay at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to receive your permits. You may opt to receive your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them immediately.

Our Happy Clients!
Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.
Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time
Los Angeles, CA
Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.
We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
The BEST way to experience the beautiful garden island! Not only a great service–transportation doubling as your lodging–but wonderful and warm hosts. Jonathan and Jamie were so kind and helpful. An absolutely wonderful trip to Kauai–thank you both!
