Commonly Asked Questions
Are there any age limits to rent from you?
We try to work with customers who are 25 years and older because of our insurance policy restrictions. On the other hand, based upon your circumstances, whenever possible, we always strive to be flexible.
If you are below twenty-five, try checking in with your insurance company to find out if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are your roof top tents family friendly?
Yes! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop campers you will need to climb a small ladder. If this is a concern, we also provide an additional tent with each of our packages which you could put up on the ground beside the camper vehicle. This could be more comfortable for both you as well as your children.
How many people can your camping trucks accommodate?
The roof top tent camping trucks fit 3 people at most, although if there are more in your party, we do have an extra tent, as well. With this, we can easily allow for up to 5 individuals. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards and also fins on request for a small fee. Simply tell us up-front if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a guide or a map with the best areas to explore on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to check out & go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to head to any beach front for camping?
You could drive up to any beach, however, you can only set up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We’ll give you a list of the best places to visit and to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we just go to designated camping grounds? If so, what is the cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You may only go camping in specified locations with a current camping permit. The associated fee is around $3 per night stay in most Kauai county campgrounds, but private camping grounds may be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you will have total access to facilities, including restrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you decide to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.
Can you recommend any Kauai camping sites where I can set up the roof top tent?

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It’s a good idea to get your Kauai camping permits before your journey. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your licenses online and also in person in the designated office.
If you decide to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you can ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
In advance, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. But it’s not absolutely necessary to reserve your camping licenses before your arrival. You may also get them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
How long will it take to get the camping permits?
If you decide to stay at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to camp at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to receive your permits. Permits can be bought at the permit offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are issued immediately.
