Here are Some Commonly Asked Questions

Are there any age restrictions to rent from you?

We would rather like to do business with clients who are 25 years and older because of our insurance policy restrictions. Having said that, based on your circumstances, whenever possible, we strive to be accommodating.

If you are younger than twenty-five, consider checking with your insurance provider to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.

Could you accommodate families with kids?

Certainly! Please note that using our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb up a small ladder. If this is a concern, we also provide an extra camping tent with every package which you can easily put up on the ground next to the camping truck. This may be more convenient for you as well as your young ones.

How many people can your camper vehicles accommodate?

Our camping trucks sleep three people at most, though if there are more in your group, we do have an additional tent, as well. With this, we can easily accommodate up to five individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.

What about surfboards?

Absolutely yes, we provide surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a small fee. Simply inform us up-front if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we receive a guide or even a map with the nicest areas to explore on Kauai?

Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to visit & go camping on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Details About Camping Permits

Can I visit any beach front to camp?

You can drive up to any beach, however, you can only put up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We will supply you with a list of the greatest places to check out and to go camping. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” permitted or are we only able to go to designated camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?

No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only go camping in official areas with a valid camping permit. The associated fee is about $3 per night stay in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, though private campgrounds may be a little more. One particular advantage of these campgrounds is that you have total access to amenities, such as bathrooms, showers and picnic tables. Please be aware that if you opt to camp on the county campsites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Where can I park and sleep with my roof top tent truck?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.
  • YMCA of Kaua’i (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4477 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766
  • Kumu Camp: Anahola Beach Retreat (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4275 Poha Rd, Anahola, HI 96703

  • Camp Slogget operated by YWCA Kaua’i in stunning Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): get directions from their web page https://ywcakauai.org/camp-sloggett
  • Camp Hale Koa – private campground in Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): this is for larger groups only, for more info, please visit their website http://camphalekoa.com

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is a better to organize your Kauai camping license prior to your arrival. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses on the internet and also on-the-spot in the designated office.

If you opt to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.

In advance, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are bank checks as well as money orders. However, it is not necessary to book your camping permits prior to your arrival. You can also get them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.

How much time does it take to get the camping permits?

No matter whether you choose to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to stay at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to get your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given right away.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
