Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any age limits to rent from you?
We would rather like to work with clients who are actually twenty-five years and above due to our insurance coverage restrictions. However, based upon your circumstances, whenever possible, we strive to be accommodating.
If you are below 25 years, consider contacting your insurance company to determine if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.
Are your rooftop tents kids friendly?
Of course! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb up one small ladder. If this sounds like a problem, we also provide an additional tent with each of our packages which you can easily put up on the ground. This could be much more comfortable for you and your young ones.
What is the maximum capacity of your trucks?
We can fit 3 people at most, though if there are more in your group, we do offer an extra tent, too. With this, we can easily allow for as much as five people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins on request for a fee. Simply let us know in advance if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a guide book or a map with the greatest areas to explore on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to check out and go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Information About Camping Permits
Can I head to any beach for camping?
You may drive up to any beach, but you can only set up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the standard practice here on Kauai. We’ll provide you with a list of the top places to visit and to go camping. Please remember that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or can we just visit designated camping grounds? If so, what is the charge?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You should only camp in specified areas with secured camping permits. The fee is about $3 per night in most Kauai county parks, though private camp sites could be a little more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have total access to amenities, like restrooms, showers & picnic tables. Please be aware that if you choose to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.
Can you suggest any Kauai camping sites where I can set up the roof top tent?

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is definitely a better to organize your Kauai camping permits before your trip. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses on the internet and also in person in the designated office.
If you choose to camp at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you may request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
Up-front, the charges are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders and cashier’s checks. However, it is not absolutely necessary to reserve your camping licenses before your arrival. You could also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
No matter whether you decide to stay at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to go to a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite some time to get your permits. Permits can be bought at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are issued immediately.
