Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I go to any beach for camping?
You may go to any beach, nevertheless, you can only put up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard procedure. We’ll give you a list of the top places to explore and to camp in. Please note that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or can we only visit designated camping sites? If so, what is the charge?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted on the island of Kauai. You should only camp in specific locations with secured camping permits. The fee is about $3 per night in most Kauai county campgrounds, though private campsites could be a little more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have total access to amenities, such as bathrooms, showers & picnic kitchen tables. Please keep in mind that if you decide to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?
It’s a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license before your trip. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses online and also in person in the designated office.
If you decide to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Up-front, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are bank checks and money orders. But you don’t have to book your camping permits before your planned arrival. You could also get them at the various permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
If you choose to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite a while to get your permits. You might obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will receive them right away.

Our Happy Clients!
Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.
Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.
We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
The BEST way to experience the beautiful garden island! Not only a great service–transportation doubling as your lodging–but wonderful and warm hosts. Jonathan and Jamie were so kind and helpful. An absolutely wonderful trip to Kauai–thank you both!
