Commonly Asked Questions
Is there a minimum age to rent from you?
We try to do business with customers who are twenty-five years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. On the other hand, based on your situation, whenever possible, we always try to be accommodating.
If you are younger than 25 years, consider contacting your insurance provider to see if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.
Can you accommodate adults who have kids?
Yes! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb up a little ladder. If this is an issue, we offer an additional tent with each package which you could put up on the ground. This can be much more comfortable for both you and your children.
How many individuals can your camper vehicles fit?
Our camper vehicles fit three people maximum, although if there are more in your party, we do have an extra tent, as well. With this, we are able to accommodate about five individuals. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a small fee. Simply let us know beforehand if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we receive a guidebook or perhaps a map with the best hiking trails and beaches to visit on Kauai?
Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to visit & go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to visit any beach for camping?
You may drive up to any beach, however, you can only put up your camp in designated camping grounds. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We’ll give you a list of the best locations to visit and to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” permitted or can we only visit designated camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted on the island of Kauai. You may only camp in designated locations with a current camping permit. The charge is approximately $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, but private camping grounds could be a bit more. One advantage of these camping grounds is that you have complete access to amenities, including restrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please note that if you choose to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?
It’s a good idea to obtain your Kauai camping license before your journey. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may get your permits on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you opt to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you can request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
Non-residents must pay 3 dollars per night in advance. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are cashier’s checks and also money orders. But it isn’t absolutely necessary to book your camping licenses prior to your planned arrival. You can also obtain them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
If you decide to go to a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to stay at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite a while to receive your permits. Permits can be bought at the permit offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given on the spot.
