FAQs
Is there a minimum age for renting from you?
We prefer to work with clients who are actually twenty-five years and older because of our insurance coverage restrictions. But, based on your needs, whenever we can, we always try to be flexible.
If you are younger than 25 years, consider checking with your insurer to find out whether you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are your roof top tent camping trucks family friendly?
Indeed! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop campers you will need to climb a small ladder. If this sounds like a concern, we offer an extra tent with each of our packages which you can set up on the ground next to your camper vehicle. This could be more convenient for you and also your kids.
What is the maximum capacity of your vehicles?
Our roof top tent camping vehicles sleep 3 people maximum, although if there are more within your group, we do offer an additional camping tent, too. With this, we can easily fit up to five people. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
Do you provide surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and fins upon request for a fee. Just let us know up-front if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we receive a guide or a map with the nicest places to visit on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit and camp out on Kauai.
Top Locations For Camping Out On Kauai & Information About Camping Permits
Am I able to go to any beach front to camp?
You could go to any beach, nevertheless, you should only put up your camp in official camping sites. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We’ll provide you with a list of the top places to check out and to camp in. Please be aware that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we only visit official camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only camp in specific locations with a current camping permit. The charge is approximately $3 per night stay in the majority of Kauai county parks, but private campsites may be a little more. One advantage of these campgrounds is that you have total access to amenities, including showers, washrooms & picnic kitchen tables. Please remember that if you decide to camp on the county campsites, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It is a better to organize your Kauai camping license before your journey. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses online and also in person in the designated office.
If you decide to camp at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Non-residents have to pay 3 dollars per night in advance. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are money orders & cashier’s checks. However, it is not absolutely necessary to reserve your camping permits prior to your planned arrival. You may also get them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
How long will it take to obtain the camping permits?
If you decide to go to a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to camp at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to receive your permits. Permits can be bought at the license offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given on the spot.
