Commonly Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We prefer to work with clients who are twenty-five years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. Nevertheless, depending on your needs, whenever possible, we strive to be flexible.
In case you are younger than twenty-five, consider contacting your insurer to find out whether you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are you able to accommodate adults who have children?
Indeed! Please note that using our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb up a small ladder. If this is a problem, we provide an additional tent with every package which you can put up on the ground next to the camper truck. This could be much more comfortable for you and your young ones.
What is the max. capacity of your vehicles?
We are able to fit 3 people at most, although if there are more in your group, we do have an additional camping tent, as well. With this, we can easily allow for about 5 people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Certainly, our company offers surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a small fee. Just inform us up-front if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a guide or a map with the nicest beaches and hiking trails to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out & camp out on Kauai.
Ideal Spots For Camping Outdoors On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to go to any beach to camp?
You could go to any beach, however, you can only set up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We’ll provide you with a list of the ideal locations to explore and to go camping. Please be aware that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we just go to designated camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed in Kauai. You should only camp in official areas with secured camping permits. The associated fee is around $3 per night stay in most Kauai county campgrounds, though private campgrounds may be a bit more. One advantage of these camping grounds is that you have full access to facilities, like restrooms, showers & picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you choose to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.
What campgrounds do you recommend with the rooftop camping tent?
- Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
- Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It is a better to get your Kauai camping license before your trip. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits on the internet and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you decide to stay at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you can ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Up-front, the fees are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, you don’t necessarily have to reserve your camping licenses prior to your planned arrival. You may also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
How long does it take to get the camping permits?
Whether you decide to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to camp at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite a while to obtain your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are issued on the spot.

Our Happy Clients!
Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.
Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time
Los Angeles, CA
Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.
We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
The BEST way to experience the beautiful garden island! Not only a great service–transportation doubling as your lodging–but wonderful and warm hosts. Jonathan and Jamie were so kind and helpful. An absolutely wonderful trip to Kauai–thank you both!
