Commonly Asked Questions
What’s the minimum age for renting from you?
We try to work with clients who are 25 years and above due to our insurance coverage restrictions. On the other hand, based upon your needs, whenever possible, we strive to be flexible.
If you are younger than 25 years, try contacting your insurance company to determine if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are you able to accommodate families with children?
Of course! Please note that using our rooftop campers you will need to climb up a little ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we provide an additional camping tent with every package which you could put up on the ground. This could be much more comfortable for both you and your young ones.
What is the maximum capacity of your camping trucks?
The camping vehicles sleep 3 individuals maximum, though in case there are more in your group, we do have an additional tent, too. With this, we are able to fit up to five people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
Are you able to provide surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards and fins on request for a fee. Just tell us beforehand if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a guidebook or perhaps a map with the best beaches and hiking trails to explore on Kauai?
Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to check out & camp out on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits
Am I able to visit any beach front to camp?
You can drive up to any beach, but you should only set up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We’ll give you a list of the best places to explore and also to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we only able to go to official camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You should only go camping in specific locations with a valid camping permit. The fee is approximately $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, though private campsites may be a bit more. The good thing about these campgrounds is that you have full access to amenities, like restrooms, showers & picnic kitchen tables. Please note that if you choose to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.
Could you recommend any Kauai camping sites where I can set up the roof top tent?

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It’s a better to get your Kauai camping permits before your trip. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits online and also on-the-spot in the designated office.
If you choose to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Non-residents need to pay three dollars per night in advance. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are cashier’s checks and also money orders. But you don’t have to book your camping permits before your arrival. You may also get them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
If you decide to go to a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to get your permits. You may choose to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them right away.
