Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a minimum age to rent from you?
We would rather like to work with clients who are actually 25 years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. However, depending on your situation, whenever possible, we try to be accommodating.
In case you are below 25 years, try checking in with your insurer to find out if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Are your roof top tents kids friendly?
Of course! Please note that using our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb a small ladder. If this is a problem, we also offer an extra camping tent with all of our packages which you can put up on the ground. This could be much more comfortable for you and also your young ones.
How many people can your camping trucks fit?
The roof top tent camper trucks sleep three individuals maximum, though if there are more within your party, we do offer an extra camping tent, as well. With this, we can easily fit up to five individuals. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards and fins on request for a small fee. Simply tell us up-front if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a guidebook or a map with the greatest places to visit on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out & go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits
Am I able to head to any beach front to camp?
You could go to any beach, however, you can only put up your camp in official camping sites. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We will provide you with a list of the ideal locations to visit and to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or are we just able to go to official camping grounds? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted on the island of Kauai. You may only go camping in specific locations with secured camping permits. The associated fee is roughly $3 per night stay in most Kauai county parks, but private campsites may be a little more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have full access to amenities, like showers, washrooms and picnic dining tables. Please note that if you decide to camp on the county campsites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.
What camping grounds do you recommend with the rooftop camping tent?
- Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
- Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It is definitely a better to get your Kauai camping license prior to your trip. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you opt to stay at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you can request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
Non-residents must pay three dollars per night up-front. Payment methods accepted with this application are bank checks and money orders. But you don’t have to reserve your camping licenses prior to your planned arrival. You may also get them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
If you choose to camp at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to camp at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite a while to get your permits. You might choose to obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will receive them immediately.
