Below are Some Commonly Asked Questions

What is the minimum age for renting from you?

We would rather like to do business with customers who are twenty-five years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. Nevertheless, depending on your circumstances, whenever possible, we always strive to be accommodating.

In case you are below 25 years, consider checking in with your insurer to find out whether you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.

Could you accommodate families who have children?

Of course! Please note that using our rooftop camping vehicles you’ll have to climb up a small ladder. If this sounds like a problem, we also offer an additional tent with every package which you could set up on the ground beside the camper truck. This can be more suitable for both you as well as your little ones.

What is the max. capacity of your vehicles?

The camping vehicles fit 3 individuals maximum, although in case there are more in your group, we do offer an additional tent, as well. With this, we are able to allow for about five individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.

Do you have surfboards?

Absolutely yes, our company offers surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Just let us know in advance if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Can we receive a guide or a map with the nicest locations to check out on Kauai?

Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to visit and go camping on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ

Can I visit any beach front for camping?

You can drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We will give you a list of the best locations to explore and to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” allowed or can we just go to official camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?

No, wild camping isn’t permitted on the island of Kauai. You should only camp in designated areas with secured camping permits. The charge is around $3 per night in many Kauai county campgrounds, though private campsites may be a bit more. One particular advantage of these camping grounds is that you have total access to amenities, such as showers, washrooms & picnic tables. Please be aware that if you choose to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

What campgrounds do you recommend with the rooftop tent?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is a good idea to organize your Kauai camping permits prior to your trip. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you may secure your permits online and also on-the-spot in the designated office.

If you choose to camp at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you may request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.

Non-residents need to pay three dollars per night up-front. Payment methods accepted with this application are cashier’s checks and also money orders. But it isn’t necessary to reserve your camping licenses prior to your arrival. You could also obtain them at the different permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.

What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?

Whether you decide to camp at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to go to a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite a while to obtain your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are issued immediately.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
