Here are Some Commonly Asked Questions
Is there a minimum age for renting from you?
We prefer to do business with clients who are actually 25 years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. However, based on your needs, whenever possible, we always strive to be flexible.
If you are below 25 years, try checking in with your insurance provider to determine if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Can you accommodate adults with children?
Of course! Please note that with our rooftop campers you would need to climb up a little ladder. If this is an issue, we offer an additional camping tent with every package which you could put up on the ground. This may be more comfortable for both you as well as your young children.
What is the maximum capacity of your vehicles?
We are able to accommodate three individuals maximum, though if there are more in your group, we do offer an extra camping tent, too. With this, we are able to fit as much as five people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
Do you have surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and fins upon request for a small fee. Simply tell us up-front if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a travel guide or even a map with the best hiking trails and beaches to visit on Kauai?
Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to visit and camp out on Kauai.
Perfect Places For Camping Outdoors On Kauai & Specifics About Camping Permits
Am I able to go to any beach front for camping?
You could go to any beach, however, you can only set up your camp in designated camping grounds. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We will provide you with a list of the top places to explore and also to go camping. Please remember that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or are we just able to visit designated camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping is not permitted on the island of Kauai. You may only camp in specified locations with secured camping permits. The charge is about $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, but private camp sites may be a little more. One advantage of these campgrounds is that you will have complete access to facilities, such as showers, washrooms & picnic tables. Please note that if you opt to camp on the county campsites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It is definitely a better to obtain your Kauai camping license prior to your trip. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses on the internet and also in person in the designated office.
If you decide to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
In advance, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this application are cashier’s checks and also money orders. However, it is not absolutely necessary to book your camping permits before your planned arrival. You may also obtain them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
Whether you decide to camp at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to obtain your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given immediately.
