Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any age restrictions to rent from you?
We prefer to work with clients who are 25 years and older due to our insurance policy restrictions. But, based upon your circumstances, whenever we can, we strive to be accommodating.
If you are younger than twenty-five, try contacting your insurer to see if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.
Are your roof top tents family friendly?
Yes! Please note that using our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb one small ladder. If this is an issue, we offer an additional camping tent with all of our packages which you can easily set up on the ground next to the camping vehicle. This can be more convenient for you as well as your little ones.
How many individuals can your camper trucks fit?
We can accommodate three individuals maximum, although in case there are more in your group, we do provide an additional tent, as well. With this, we are able to fit about 5 people. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.
Can you provide surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Simply tell us in advance if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a travel guide or a map with the best beaches and hiking trails to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to see and camp out on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I head to any beach for camping?
You may drive up to any beach, but you can only put up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We will supply you with a list of the greatest places to visit and to go camping. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we just able to go to official camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed in Kauai. You may only go camping in official locations with secured camping permits. The fee is about $3 per night stay in many Kauai county parks, but private camping grounds could be a bit more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have total access to amenities, like washrooms, showers and picnic dining tables. Please keep in mind that if you opt to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is a good idea to get your Kauai camping license before your trip. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you choose to stay at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you can ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Non-residents have to pay 3 dollars per night in advance. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, it is not absolutely necessary to book your camping permits prior to your arrival. You could also obtain them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
No matter whether you decide to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to camp at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to get your permits. You may opt to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will get them right away.
