Is there a minimum age for renting from you?

We would rather like to do business with customers who are 25 years and older due to our insurance policy restrictions. But, based upon your situation, whenever possible, we always try to be accommodating.

In case you are below 25 years, try checking with your insurer to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.

Are your rooftop tents family friendly?

Yes! Please note that with our rooftop campers you will need to climb up a little ladder. If this is a problem, we also provide an additional tent with each package which you may set up on the ground next to your camping truck. This can be much more comfortable for both you as well as your little ones.

How many individuals can your camping trucks accommodate?

We are able to fit three people at most, though if there are more within your group, we do have an extra tent, too. With this, we can easily accommodate up to 5 individuals. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.

Are you offering surfboards?

Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and also fins upon request for a small fee. Just let us know beforehand if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Can I visit any beach to camp?

You can drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in designated camping grounds. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the best locations to explore and also to go camping. Please be aware that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” allowed or can we just go to designated camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?

No, wild camping is not permitted in Kauai. You can only go camping in designated areas with a valid camping permit. The charge is about $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, but private campsites may be a bit more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you have complete access to facilities, like showers, washrooms & picnic tables. Please be aware that if you choose to camp on the county campsites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is a better to obtain your Kauai camping license before your trip. For the majority of private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits on the internet and also in person in the respective office.

If you opt to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.

Non-residents must pay three dollars per night beforehand. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. But it is not necessary to book your camping licenses before your arrival. You could also obtain them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.

What is the processing time for getting camping permits?

If you choose to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to get your permits. You may opt to receive your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them immediately.
