FAQs

Is there an age requirement to rent from you?

We try to do business with clients who are actually twenty-five years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. Nevertheless, based upon your situation, whenever we can, we always try to be accommodating.

In case you are below 25 years, consider contacting your insurance company to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.

Are your rooftop tents family friendly?

Yes! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop campers you will need to climb up a little ladder. If this sounds like a problem, we provide an additional camping tent with each package which you may set up on the ground. This may be much more comfortable for you and also your young children.

What is the maximum capacity of your vehicles?

We could accommodate 3 people maximum, though if there are more in your party, we do provide an extra camping tent, too. With this, we can easily allow for about five individuals. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.

Can you provide surfboards?

Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards and also fins on request for a small fee. Simply inform us in advance if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we receive a guide or a map with the best hiking trails & beaches to explore on Kauai?

Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit & camp out on Kauai.

Best Spots For Camping Outdoors On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ

Can I go to any beach to camp?

You can drive up to any beach, but you can only put up your camp in designated camping grounds. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We’ll provide you with a list of the ideal locations to visit and also to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.

Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we just able to go to designated camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?

No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You should only go camping in designated areas with secured camping permits. The fee is about $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, though private camp sites could be a bit more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have complete access to facilities, like showers, bathrooms & picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you opt to camp on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is definitely a good idea to obtain your Kauai camping permits before your arrival. For the majority of private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits online and also in person in the designated office.

If you decide to camp at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you may ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.

In advance, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this application are bank checks and money orders. However, it is not necessary to book your camping licenses prior to your arrival. You may also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.

How long does it take to get the camping permits?

If you decide to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to stay at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite a while to get your permits. Permits can be bought at the permit offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given immediately.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
