Commonly Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We would rather like to do business with clients who are actually twenty-five years and above due to our insurance coverage restrictions. Having said that, depending on your circumstances, whenever possible, we try to be flexible.
In case you are younger than 25 years, consider checking with your insurer to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Are your roof top tent camping trucks kids friendly?
Indeed! Please note that using our rooftop camping vehicles you’ll have to climb a little ladder. If this is an issue, we provide an additional camping tent with each package which you can put up on the ground beside the camping vehicle. This may be much more comfortable for you as well as your kids.
How many people can your camper vehicles accommodate?
The camping trucks sleep 3 individuals at most, though if there are more within your group, we do have an extra camping tent, too. With this, we can easily fit about 5 individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards and also fins upon request for a small fee. Simply tell us beforehand if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a guide or even a map with the nicest hiking trails & beaches to explore on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to visit & camp out on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits
Can I head to any beach front for camping?
You may go to any beach, but you can only set up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We’ll provide you with a list of the top locations to visit and to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or are we just able to visit official camping grounds? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping is not permitted in Kauai. You may only camp in designated areas with secured camping permits. The associated fee is approximately $3 per night stay in many Kauai county parks, though private camping grounds could be a little more. One particular advantage of these campgrounds is that you have full access to amenities, including showers, bathrooms & picnic dining tables. Please remember that if you choose to camp on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is a good idea to obtain your Kauai camping license prior to your journey. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits online and also in person in the respective office.
If you opt to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Up-front, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders and cashier’s checks. However, you don’t have to reserve your camping permits before your planned arrival. You could also get them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
How much time will it take to obtain the camping permits?
If you decide to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to camp at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite a while to obtain your permits. Permits can be bought at the permit offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given right away.
