Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We try to work with clients who are twenty-five years and older due to our insurance policy restrictions. However, depending on your situation, whenever possible, we try to be flexible.
If you are below twenty-five, try checking in with your insurer to determine if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.
Are your rooftop tents family friendly?
Absolutely! Please note that with our rooftop campers you will need to climb one small ladder. If this sounds like a problem, we also offer an additional camping tent with each package which you can put up on the ground beside the camping truck. This may be more convenient for you and also your little ones.
How many people can your camper vehicles accommodate?
The camper trucks sleep three people maximum, though in case there are more within your party, we do offer an extra camping tent, as well. With this, we can easily accommodate up to five people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
Do you offer surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Just inform us up-front if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we receive a guidebook or perhaps a map with the greatest hiking trails & beaches to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit and go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits
Can I visit any beach front to camp?
You can drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard procedure. We’ll give you a list of the greatest places to explore and also to camp in. Please remember that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or are we just able to visit designated camping sites? If so, how much is the fee?
No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You can only camp in designated areas with a current camping permit. The fee is about $3 per night in many Kauai county parks, but private campgrounds may be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you have complete access to facilities, like washrooms, showers & picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you decide to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It’s a better to obtain your Kauai camping license before your trip. For the majority of private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits online and also in person in the respective office.
If you opt to camp at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you can ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Up-front, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are bank checks as well as money orders. But you don’t have to book your camping licenses prior to your arrival. You can also get them at the various permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
If you decide to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to go to a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to get your permits. You might receive your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the various permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them on the spot.
