Perfect Locations For Camping Out On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I visit any beach front to camp?
You can drive up to any beach, however, you can only put up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard procedure. We’ll provide you with a list of the greatest places to check out and to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we only go to official camping sites? If so, how much is the cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You should only camp in designated locations with a current camping permit. The associated fee is about $3 per night in most Kauai county campgrounds, but private campgrounds could be a bit more. One advantage of these camping grounds is that you have complete access to amenities, such as showers, washrooms and picnic kitchen tables. Please keep in mind that if you opt to go camping on the county campsites, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It is a better to obtain your Kauai camping permits before your trip. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses on the internet and also in person in the designated office.
If you decide to camp at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Non-residents have to pay three dollars per night beforehand. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are cashier’s checks as well as money orders. However, it’s not necessary to reserve your camping licenses prior to your arrival. You could also obtain them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
If you choose to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to camp at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite some time to receive your permits. Permits can be bought at the permit offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are issued on-the-spot.
