Below are Some Commonly Asked Questions
What’s the minimum age for renting from you?
We try to do business with customers who are actually 25 years and older due to our insurance coverage restrictions. But, based upon your needs, whenever we can, we always try to be accommodating.
In case you are below twenty-five, consider checking in with your insurer to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Would you be able to accommodate adults who have kids?
Of course! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop campers you will need to climb up one small ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we also provide an extra camping tent with each package which you could set up on the ground. This can be more convenient for you and also your kids.
How many individuals can your camping vehicles fit?
We could accommodate three people maximum, though in case there are more within your group, we do have an additional tent, as well. With this, we can easily accommodate as much as 5 individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards and also fins on request for a small fee. Simply tell us beforehand if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a travel guide or perhaps a map with the greatest locations to visit on Kauai?
Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to see and go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits
Can I go to any beach for camping?
You could go to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We’ll give you a list of the best locations to visit and to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we just go to official camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted in Kauai. You may only go camping in specific areas with a current camping permit. The associated fee is about $3 per night stay in many Kauai county parks, but private campsites may be a bit more. The good thing about these campgrounds is that you will have total access to amenities, including washrooms, showers & picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you decide to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.
Could you suggest any Kauai camp sites where we can set up the roof top tent?

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is definitely a better to get your Kauai camping license prior to your journey. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses online and also in person in the respective office.
If you decide to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Non-residents have to pay three dollars per night up-front. Payment methods accepted with this application are bank checks and money orders. But you don’t have to book your camping permits prior to your planned arrival. You could also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
Whether you choose to camp at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to stay at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to obtain your permits. You may choose to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them right away.

Our Happy Clients!
Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.
Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time
Los Angeles, CA
Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.
We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
The BEST way to experience the beautiful garden island! Not only a great service–transportation doubling as your lodging–but wonderful and warm hosts. Jonathan and Jamie were so kind and helpful. An absolutely wonderful trip to Kauai–thank you both!
