FAQs
What’s the minimum age for renting from you?
We try to do business with clients who are twenty-five years and older due to our insurance policy restrictions. On the other hand, based upon your needs, whenever possible, we always strive to be flexible.
In case you are younger than 25 years, consider contacting your insurance provider to determine if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.
Are your roof top tents kids friendly?
Yes! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb one small ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we provide an additional camping tent with all of our packages which you can set up on the ground. This may be more convenient for both you as well as your children.
What is the maximum capacity of your camper vehicles?
We are able to fit 3 individuals maximum, though if there are more in your party, we do have an extra camping tent, too. With this, we can easily allow for about 5 people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins on request for a fee. Simply let us know beforehand if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a guidebook or a map with the nicest hiking trails and beaches to visit on Kauai?
Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to see and camp out on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Specifics About Camping Permits
Can I head to any beach to camp?
You may go to any beach, nevertheless, you should only set up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We will provide you with a list of the greatest locations to visit and also to camp in. Please be aware that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” permitted or can we just go to designated camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted in Kauai. You should only camp in designated areas with a valid camping permit. The associated fee is approximately $3 per night stay in the majority of Kauai county parks, but private camping grounds may be a little more. One particular advantage of these campgrounds is that you will have complete access to facilities, like showers, restrooms & picnic tables. Please be aware that if you opt to go camping on the county campsites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is a better to organize your Kauai camping permits before your arrival. For the majority of private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you decide to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Non-residents have to pay 3 dollars per night up-front. Accepted payment methods with this application are bank checks and money orders. However, it is not absolutely necessary to book your camping licenses prior to your arrival. You can also get them at the different permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
How much time will it take to get the camping permits?
If you choose to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite a while to obtain your permits. You may choose to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will get them on the spot.
