Below are Some Commonly Asked Questions
What is the minimum age to rent from you?
We prefer to do business with customers who are actually twenty-five years and older because of our insurance coverage restrictions. Having said that, depending on your needs, whenever we can, we always try to be accommodating.
In case you are below 25 years, try checking in with your insurance company to determine if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are your rooftop tents family friendly?
Certainly! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb one small ladder. If this sounds like a concern, we provide an additional tent with each package which you can easily put up on the ground. This can be more convenient for both you as well as your young ones.
What is the max. capacity of your trucks?
We can fit 3 individuals at most, although in case there are more within your party, we do provide an additional tent, as well. With this, we are able to fit about 5 individuals. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Simply let us know up-front if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we receive a guide or a map with the greatest hiking trails and beaches to visit on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit & go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Information About Camping Permits
Am I able to head to any beach for camping?
You can drive up to any beach, however, you can only set up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We’ll supply you with a list of the greatest places to explore and also to camp in. Please note that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we only go to designated camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping is not permitted in Kauai. You may only go camping in designated areas with a current camping permit. The associated fee is about $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county parks, but private campgrounds may be a little more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you have total access to facilities, including showers, restrooms & picnic kitchen tables. Please remember that if you choose to camp on the county campsites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.
What campsites do you suggest with the rooftop camping tent?

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It’s a better to obtain your Kauai camping license before your arrival. For the majority of private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses on the internet and also on-the-spot in the designated office.
If you decide to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may obtain permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Up-front, the costs are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are bank checks and also money orders. But it isn’t necessary to book your camping licenses before your planned arrival. You may also get them at the various permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
Whether you decide to go to a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to obtain your permits. Permits can be obtained at the permit offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are issued on the spot.
