FAQs
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We prefer to work with customers who are actually 25 years and older because of our insurance coverage restrictions. On the other hand, depending on your circumstances, whenever we can, we always strive to be flexible.
If you are below twenty-five, try checking with your insurance company to find out if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Could you accommodate adults with kids?
Absolutely! Please note that using our rooftop campers you will need to climb a small ladder. If this is a concern, we offer an additional camping tent with every package which you can easily set up on the ground next to the camping truck. This could be much more comfortable for you as well as your kids.
How many people can your camping vehicles accommodate?
We could fit 3 individuals maximum, although in case there are more in your group, we do provide an extra tent, too. With this, we are able to accommodate about 5 people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
Are you able to provide surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and also fins upon request for a fee. Simply inform us in advance if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we receive a travel guide or even a map with the best beaches & hiking trails to visit on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to check out and go camping on Kauai.
Best Places For Camping On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to go to any beach to camp?
You could go to any beach, however, you can only set up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard procedure. We’ll give you a list of the top locations to check out and to go camping. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or are we only able to visit official camping grounds? If so, how much is the charge?
No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You can only camp in designated locations with secured camping permits. The fee is approximately $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, but private campsites may be a bit more. One advantage of these camping grounds is that you have complete access to facilities, such as washrooms, showers & picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you choose to camp on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is a good idea to get your Kauai camping permits prior to your arrival. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses on the internet and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you decide to camp at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Non-residents need to pay 3 dollars per night beforehand. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. But it isn’t necessary to reserve your camping permits before your arrival. You may also get them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
How much time does it take to get the camping permits?
If you choose to stay at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to go to a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to get your permits. You may opt to obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them right away.
