Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the minimum age to rent from you?
We would rather like to work with customers who are 25 years and above due to our insurance coverage restrictions. However, depending on your needs, whenever possible, we strive to be flexible.
In case you are below twenty-five, consider checking in with your insurance provider to find out if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.
Are you able to accommodate families who have children?
Absolutely! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb a little ladder. If this is a problem, we also offer an additional tent with all of our packages which you can easily put up on the ground. This may be much more comfortable for you and also your kids.
How many individuals can your camper vehicles fit?
We can fit 3 people at most, though in case there are more within your group, we do provide an additional camping tent, as well. With this, we can easily allow for as much as 5 people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and fins upon request for a small fee. Simply inform us beforehand if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a travel guide or perhaps a map with the greatest hiking trails and beaches to explore on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to see and go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to go to any beach to camp?
You may drive up to any beach, but you can only put up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the best locations to check out and to camp in. Please note that driving on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or can we only go to official camping grounds? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping is not permitted on the island of Kauai. You can only go camping in official areas with a current camping permit. The fee is about $3 per night stay in the majority of Kauai county parks, but private campgrounds could be a bit more. One particular advantage of these camping grounds is that you have full access to amenities, like showers, restrooms & picnic tables. Please keep in mind that if you decide to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is a good idea to get your Kauai camping license before your arrival. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can secure your licenses online and also in person in the respective office.
If you decide to stay at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you can obtain permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Non-residents must pay three dollars per night in advance. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. However, you don’t necessarily have to reserve your camping permits prior to your planned arrival. You may also obtain them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
No matter if you decide to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to stay at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite some time to receive your permits. You might obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will receive them on the spot.

Our Happy Clients!
Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.
Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.
We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
The BEST way to experience the beautiful garden island! Not only a great service–transportation doubling as your lodging–but wonderful and warm hosts. Jonathan and Jamie were so kind and helpful. An absolutely wonderful trip to Kauai–thank you both!
