Sleep Like a King, Among the Stars

Sleeping in the great outdoors can be hit or miss. We’re all too familiar with uneven ground and biting insects. That’s why our rooftop tents are the stuff of camping legends. They’re as spacious as a queen-sized bed and have built-in 3-inch foam mattresses.

Plus, you won’t have to spend an hour wrestling with tent poles. Ours set up in seconds, so you can enjoy a cozy night under the stars without the hassle.

Charity with Every Adventure

We’re not just about giving you a great camping experience; we’re also committed to making the world a better place. Partnering with Embracing the World, a slice of our annual revenue goes to global charities.

So, when you’re watching the Kauai sunrise from your rooftop tent, you’ll know you’re also lighting up someone else’s world.

Dollars and Cents: How Our Rates Work

While our prices are seasonally adjusted, they’re calculated by the calendar day, not by the hour. No sneaky hidden fees here! You get unlimited miles, and the only thing you’ll need to think about is what scenic spots you’ll visit next. Minimum rental? Just 3 days. By then, you’ll be so enamored with car camping that you won’t want to leave

All the Essentials, No Fuss

We know you’re eager to hit the road, but let’s not forget the all-important rules. You’ve got to be at least 25 years old, and you’ll need to show us your valid driver’s license and proof of comprehensive insurance.

International travelers, bring your passports. For a little extra, we even offer airport drop-off and pick-up services to make your journey smoother.

Commonly Asked Questions

Are there any age limits to rent from you? We try to work with customers who are twenty-five years and older due to our insurance coverage restrictions. Having said that, depending on your situation, whenever we can, we always try to be flexible. If you are below twenty-five, consider contacting your insurance company to determine if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us. Are your roof top tent campers kids friendly? Certainly! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb a little ladder. If this sounds like a problem, we provide an extra camping tent with every package which you can easily put up on the ground. This may be more convenient for you and your little ones. What is the maximum capacity of your camping vehicles? Our camping trucks fit three individuals maximum, though if there are more within your group, we do provide an extra camping tent, as well. With this, we can easily accommodate as much as 5 people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts. What about surfboards? Absolutely yes, we provide surfboards and boogie boards and also fins upon request for a fee. Just let us know beforehand if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure. Do we get a travel guide or even a map with the greatest hiking trails and beaches to check out on Kauai? Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to check out and camp out on Kauai.

Best Spots For Camping On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ

Am I able to go to any beach for camping? You could go to any beach, nevertheless, you should only put up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard procedure. We’ll supply you with a list of the best places to visit and also to go camping. Please note that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai. Is “wild camping” permitted or can we just visit designated camping sites? If so, how much will it cost? No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only camp in designated areas with secured camping permits. The associated fee is around $3 per night in many Kauai county campgrounds, though private camp sites may be a little more. One particular advantage of these camping grounds is that you have complete access to amenities, including washrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you opt to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent. Can you recommend any Kauai campsites where we can set up the roof top tent?
  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit? It is a good idea to obtain your Kauai camping license prior to your trip. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses on the internet and also in person in the respective office. If you choose to camp at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page. Non-residents need to pay 3 dollars per night in advance. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, you don’t necessarily have to book your camping licenses prior to your planned arrival. You could also get them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier. How long will it take to obtain the camping permits? Whether you choose to camp at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to go to a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite a while to get your permits. You might choose to obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them right away. Great experience with this company. They are very communicative and want to ensure you have a good trip and this is obvious with the lengths they go. The rental was in good condition. Jenni and Chantal were super friendly and would happily rent from them again!

My friend (first time camping) and I really enjoyed the approach that Kauai Rooftop Campers provide! Riding and camping on top of a 4Runner was outstanding. The setup system is quite easy and intuitive, Jeni (from Kauai Rooftop Campers) made sure we had all the info needed. We were able to interact with other campers who also were booking though Kauai Rooftop Campers, all of them seemed pleased with the experience! We had to rebook twice but everything went very well in the end. We had an issue with one of the State camping sites we booked for (Milloli´i beach) because we didn’t know Kauai, nevertheless, Jeni and Dona (Kumu Camp´s owner) were extremely helpful and very responsive. So, I would highly recommend Kauai Rooftop Campers! Additional notes and recommendations: We agree that Kumu Camp is a great spot to stay. There are Metal/Plastic/Glass bins for recycling (even a compost bin), so make sure you don’t dispose of those recyclables in the main garbage. Please be mindful, compact metal & plastic in order to improve space, time and resources. Don’t forget to leave every place better than you found it. We always had a container/bag at hand to collect the garbage at the camp, beaches, and other places. Microplastics and comercial tobacco butts are becoming a big issue everywhere! We advise you not to camp in Milloli´i beach unless you have access to a boat, and the time and the knowledge for an extreme adventure. NOTE: There isn’t that much info about that site out there. Blessings!!

As a family of 4, we combined a rooftop tent + ground tent, and it worked perfectly! The service from Kauai Rooftop Campers was excellent, they were really flexible (we even got an upgrade!) and they allowed us to store our excess luggage in their buildings for the duration of our trip. Jeni even came to us when there was a small issue, so nothing but compliments for the service we got! We stayed both at Kumu & at Koke’e state campground and had an abolute blast!

Camping on a Jeep Rubicon, that is an experience. We had a mega fun. The people from Kauai Rooftop Campers are extremely helpful and very friendly. They help with all questions. The next campground is Kumu Camping and is highly recommended. We will definitely come back again and book a Jeep Rubicon again.
