Features that Define Comfort

One of the most appealing aspects of our service is the quality of our rooftop tents. Featuring the approximate dimensions of a queen-sized bed and a built-in 3-inch foam mattress, our tents provide ample comfort.

Our tents are supported by a robust canvas shell, built to withstand harsh wind and rain. They also come with full mosquito netting and ventilated screen windows for a stay that’s beyond pleasant.

Unlimited Miles, Defined Rates

We offer unlimited mileage with every rental, allowing you the freedom to explore Kauai to your heart’s content. Rental duration begins at a minimum of three days, and rates are influenced by seasonal demand. All prospective renters must be at least 25 years old and provide proof of full-comprehensive insurance.

FAQs

Are there any age restrictions to rent from you?

We would rather like to work with customers who are twenty-five years and above due to our insurance coverage restrictions. But, based upon your circumstances, whenever possible, we always try to be flexible.

If you are younger than 25 years, consider checking in with your insurance provider to see if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.

Are your rooftop tents family friendly?

Yes! Please note that with our rooftop campers you will need to climb up one small ladder. If this is a problem, we offer an additional camping tent with each package which you could put up on the ground next to the camper truck. This can be more suitable for both you and also your young ones.

How many individuals can your camping vehicles fit?

We are able to accommodate 3 individuals at most, though if there are more in your party, we do have an extra tent, too. With this, we are able to accommodate about five individuals. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.

What about surfboards?

Absolutely yes, we provide both surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins on request for a small fee. Simply let us know up-front if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we get a guidebook or even a map with the best areas to visit on Kauai?

Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to see & camp out on Kauai.

Ideal Locations For Camping On Kauai & Information Regarding Camping Permits

Am I able to visit any beach front to camp?

You can go to any beach, but you can only put up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the standard practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the greatest places to visit and also to camp in. Please remember that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” permitted or can we only visit official camping grounds? If so, what is the charge?

No, wild camping isn’t permitted in Kauai. You should only camp in designated locations with secured camping permits. The associated fee is around $3 per night in many Kauai county parks, but private camp sites may be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you have complete access to amenities, including washrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please note that if you choose to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Where can I park and sleep with a roof top tent truck?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.
  • YMCA of Kaua’i (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4477 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766
  • Kumu Camp: Anahola Beach Retreat (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4275 Poha Rd, Anahola, HI 96703
  • Camp Nau’e YMCA (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 7420 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei, Kauai, HI 96714
  • Camp Slogget operated by YWCA Kaua’i in beautiful Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): get directions from their web page https://ywcakauai.org/camp-sloggett
  • Camp Hale Koa – private campground in Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): this is for larger groups only, for more information, please visit their website http://camphalekoa.com

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is a good idea to organize your Kauai camping permits prior to your arrival. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits on the internet and also in person in the respective office.

If you decide to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you can request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.

In advance, the fees are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders and cashier’s checks. However, it’s not necessary to reserve your camping permits before your planned arrival. You can also obtain them at the different permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.

What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?

No matter whether you choose to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to go to a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to obtain your permits. Permits can be bought at the license offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are issued immediately.

Great experience with this company. They are very communicative and want to ensure you have a good trip and this is obvious with the lengths they go. The rental was in good condition. Jenni and Chantal were super friendly and would happily rent from them again!

My friend (first time camping) and I really enjoyed the approach that Kauai Rooftop Campers provide! Riding and camping on top of a 4Runner was outstanding. The setup system is quite easy and intuitive, Jeni (from Kauai Rooftop Campers) made sure we had all the info needed. We were able to interact with other campers who also were booking though Kauai Rooftop Campers, all of them seemed pleased with the experience! We had to rebook twice but everything went very well in the end. We had an issue with one of the State camping sites we booked for (Milloli´i beach) because we didn’t know Kauai, nevertheless, Jeni and Dona (Kumu Camp´s owner) were extremely helpful and very responsive. So, I would highly recommend Kauai Rooftop Campers! Additional notes and recommendations: We agree that Kumu Camp is a great spot to stay. There are Metal/Plastic/Glass bins for recycling (even a compost bin), so make sure you don’t dispose of those recyclables in the main garbage. Please be mindful, compact metal & plastic in order to improve space, time and resources. Don’t forget to leave every place better than you found it. We always had a container/bag at hand to collect the garbage at the camp, beaches, and other places. Microplastics and comercial tobacco butts are becoming a big issue everywhere! We advise you not to camp in Milloli´i beach unless you have access to a boat, and the time and the knowledge for an extreme adventure. NOTE: There isn’t that much info about that site out there. Blessings!!

As a family of 4, we combined a rooftop tent + ground tent, and it worked perfectly! The service from Kauai Rooftop Campers was excellent, they were really flexible (we even got an upgrade!) and they allowed us to store our excess luggage in their buildings for the duration of our trip. Jeni even came to us when there was a small issue, so nothing but compliments for the service we got! We stayed both at Kumu & at Koke’e state campground and had an abolute blast!

Camping on a Jeep Rubicon, that is an experience. We had a mega fun. The people from Kauai Rooftop Campers are extremely helpful and very friendly. They help with all questions. The next campground is Kumu Camping and is highly recommended. We will definitely come back again and book a Jeep Rubicon again.
