Kauai Camping Guide & Specifics About Camping Permits
Can I go to any beach to camp?
You can go to any beach, nevertheless, you can only put up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the standard practice here on Kauai. We’ll provide you with a list of the best places to check out and also to camp in. Please remember that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or are we only able to go to designated camping sites? If so, how much is the cost?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted in Kauai. You can only camp in specified areas with a current camping permit. The charge is approximately $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, but private campgrounds could be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you will have complete access to amenities, including showers, washrooms and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you opt to camp on the county campsites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It’s a better to obtain your Kauai camping license before your arrival. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can secure your licenses on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you choose to camp at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you can request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Non-residents must pay three dollars per night up-front. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. But you don’t necessarily have to book your camping licenses before your arrival. You could also obtain them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
No matter whether you choose to go to a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to go to a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to get your permits. You might get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them right away.
