Commonly Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We try to do business with clients who are actually 25 years and older because of our insurance policy restrictions. However, based on your circumstances, whenever we can, we always try to be flexible.
If you are younger than twenty-five, try checking in with your insurer to find out if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.
Would you be able to accommodate adults who have kids?
Absolutely! Please note that using our rooftop campers you will need to climb up a small ladder. If this sounds like a problem, we also provide an extra tent with every package which you can easily set up on the ground. This may be more convenient for you and also your little ones.
What is the max. capacity of your camper trucks?
Our roof top tent camper trucks sleep 3 people at most, though in case there are more in your group, we do offer an extra tent, too. With this, we are able to fit about five individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Simply tell us up-front if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a guide or a map with the greatest beaches & hiking trails to check out on Kauai?
Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to see & camp out on Kauai.
Best Locations For Camping On Kauai & Specifics About Camping Permits
Can I visit any beach to camp?
You could drive up to any beach, however, you can only set up your camp in designated camping grounds. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We’ll supply you with a list of the ideal places to check out and also to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we just able to visit official camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted in Kauai. You can only camp in specified locations with secured camping permits. The charge is around $3 per night in many Kauai county parks, but private campsites could be a bit more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have full access to amenities, such as bathrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please remember that if you decide to go camping on the county campsites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is a better to organize your Kauai camping permits before your journey. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits online and also in person in the respective office.
If you decide to stay at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you can ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Up-front, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. But it is not necessary to reserve your camping permits before your arrival. You can also obtain them at the various permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
How long will it take to obtain the camping permits?
No matter whether you choose to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to camp at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite some time to receive your permits. Permits can be obtained at the permit offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given on-the-spot.
