Top Spots For Camping On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I go to any beach front for camping?
You could drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We’ll give you a list of the ideal locations to visit and also to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” permitted or can we just visit designated camping sites? If so, how much is the charge?
No, wild camping is not permitted on the island of Kauai. You should only go camping in designated areas with a current camping permit. The associated fee is around $3 per night stay in most Kauai county parks, but private campsites could be a bit more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you have full access to facilities, like washrooms, showers and picnic tables. Please keep in mind that if you decide to go camping on the county campsites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is definitely a good idea to obtain your Kauai camping permits prior to your trip. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your licenses on the internet and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you decide to stay at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you can obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Up-front, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders and cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, it’s not necessary to reserve your camping licenses prior to your arrival. You could also obtain them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
No matter if you choose to stay at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to camp at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite a while to obtain your permits. Permits can be bought at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given immediately.
