Below are Some Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a minimum age for renting from you?
We try to do business with clients who are actually twenty-five years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. On the other hand, based on your situation, whenever we can, we try to be accommodating.
If you are below 25 years, try contacting your insurance company to determine if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are your roof top tents kids friendly?
Absolutely! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb up a small ladder. If this sounds like a problem, we offer an extra camping tent with every package which you could set up on the ground next to the camping truck. This could be more suitable for both you as well as your little ones.
What is the maximum capacity of your vehicles?
We can fit three individuals maximum, although in case there are more in your party, we do have an additional tent, too. With this, we are able to allow for up to 5 individuals. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Just inform us beforehand if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a guidebook or a map with the best hiking trails and beaches to explore on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to see and go camping on Kauai.
Perfect Locations For Camping On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to go to any beach to camp?
You may drive up to any beach, but you should only set up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We will give you a list of the best places to check out and also to go camping. Please note that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or are we only able to visit official camping grounds? If so, what is the fee?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You should only go camping in official areas with secured camping permits. The charge is about $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, but private camping grounds may be a little more. The good thing about these campsites is that you will have full access to amenities, including washrooms, showers and picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you choose to go camping on the county campsites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is definitely a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license prior to your journey. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits online and also on-the-spot in the designated office.
If you opt to camp at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you may request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
In advance, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, you don’t necessarily have to reserve your camping permits prior to your planned arrival. You can also obtain them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
Whether you decide to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite a while to obtain your permits. You might choose to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them immediately.
