Is there an age requirement to rent from you?

We try to work with customers who are twenty-five years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. But, depending on your situation, whenever possible, we try to be accommodating.

If you are younger than 25 years, try checking with your insurance company to find out whether you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.

Would you be able to accommodate adults with kids?

Certainly! Please note that using our rooftop campers you would need to climb up a little ladder. If this is an issue, we also offer an extra tent with every package which you can set up on the ground next to your camper vehicle. This could be much more comfortable for you and also your little ones.

What is the maximum capacity of your camper vehicles?

We can accommodate three people at most, although if there are more in your group, we do have an additional tent, too. With this, we are able to allow for as much as 5 people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.

Can you provide surfboards?

Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Simply inform us beforehand if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we receive a guide or a map with the nicest areas to explore on Kauai?

Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out & go camping on Kauai.

Can I head to any beach front to camp?

You can go to any beach, but you should only set up your camp in designated camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We’ll supply you with a list of the greatest locations to visit and to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.

Are we permitted to camp in the wild or can we just visit official camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?

No, wild camping isn’t permitted on the island of Kauai. You should only camp in official locations with secured camping permits. The associated fee is approximately $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, though private camp sites may be a little more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have full access to amenities, including bathrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please remember that if you choose to camp on the county campsites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is a good idea to obtain your Kauai camping permits before your trip. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may get your permits online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.

If you choose to camp at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you can obtain permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.

Non-residents must pay three dollars per night in advance. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders and cashier’s checks. However, it is not absolutely necessary to reserve your camping licenses prior to your planned arrival. You can also get them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.

What is the processing time for getting camping permits?

Whether you choose to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite some time to get your permits. You might choose to obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on the island; in-person you will receive them on the spot.
