FAQs
Are there any age limits to rent from you?
We prefer to work with clients who are twenty-five years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. Nevertheless, depending on your situation, whenever possible, we always try to be accommodating.
In case you are below 25 years, consider contacting your insurance company to determine if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.
Are your roof top tent camping vehicles kids friendly?
Yes! Please note that using our rooftop campers you would need to climb a small ladder. If this sounds like a concern, we offer an additional camping tent with all of our packages which you may put up on the ground beside the camping vehicle. This can be more comfortable for you as well as your kids.
What is the maximum capacity of your vehicles?
Our camper vehicles sleep 3 individuals at most, although in case there are more within your party, we do provide an additional tent, too. With this, we can easily allow for up to 5 people. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a small fee. Simply tell us beforehand if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a travel guide or perhaps a map with the nicest beaches & hiking trails to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to see & camp out on Kauai.
Top Places For Camping Outdoors On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to visit any beach front to camp?
You may go to any beach, nevertheless, you can only set up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We’ll provide you with a list of the best places to visit and to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or are we just able to go to designated camping sites? If so, how much is the cost?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted on the island of Kauai. You should only camp in specific locations with secured camping permits. The charge is around $3 per night stay in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, but private camp sites may be a little more. One particular advantage of these campsites is that you will have full access to facilities, such as restrooms, showers & picnic tables. Please keep in mind that if you decide to camp on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.
Can you recommend any Kauai campsites where I can set up the roof top tent?

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is a better to organize your Kauai camping permits prior to your arrival. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may secure your permits on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you decide to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can obtain permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Non-residents have to pay three dollars per night in advance. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. However, it’s not absolutely necessary to book your camping permits before your planned arrival. You may also get them at the different permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
How long will it take to get the camping permits?
No matter if you choose to go to a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to camp at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite a while to obtain your permits. You might get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them right away.
