Kauai Camping Guide & Information About Camping Permits

Can I visit any beach front for camping?

You may drive up to any beach, nevertheless, you should only put up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We’ll supply you with a list of the top places to visit and also to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.

Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we only able to visit designated camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?

No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You can only go camping in specific locations with secured camping permits. The fee is about $3 per night stay in most Kauai county parks, though private campgrounds could be a little more. The good thing about these campgrounds is that you will have total access to facilities, like restrooms, showers and picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you opt to go camping on the county campsites, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Can you recommend any Kauai camping sites where I can set up the roof top tent?

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?

It’s a better to organize your Kauai camping permits before your arrival. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits online and also on-the-spot in the designated office.

If you opt to stay at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you may request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.

Up-front, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. But you don’t necessarily have to book your camping licenses before your planned arrival. You could also obtain them at the different permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.

What is the processing time for getting camping permits?

No matter whether you decide to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to camp at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to obtain your permits. You might receive your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the various permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them on the spot.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
