Commonly Asked Questions
Are there any age limits to rent from you?
We try to work with customers who are twenty-five years and older because of our insurance policy restrictions. But, depending on your needs, whenever we can, we always strive to be accommodating.
If you are younger than 25 years, try contacting your insurer to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are you able to accommodate adults who have kids?
Of course! Please note that using our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb a little ladder. If this is an issue, we offer an extra camping tent with all of our packages which you could set up on the ground. This may be more suitable for both you and also your children.
How many people can your camping trucks accommodate?
We are able to accommodate three people at most, although in case there are more in your group, we do provide an extra tent, too. With this, we are able to fit as much as 5 people. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and also fins on request for a small fee. Just let us know in advance if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we receive a travel guide or perhaps a map with the greatest beaches and hiking trails to visit on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to see & camp out on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I visit any beach to camp?
You can go to any beach, nevertheless, you can only put up your camp in designated camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We will provide you with a list of the top locations to visit and to go camping. Please note that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or can we just visit official camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You should only camp in specified areas with a current camping permit. The associated fee is roughly $3 per night in most Kauai county campgrounds, but private camping grounds may be a bit more. One particular advantage of these campgrounds is that you have total access to amenities, like washrooms, showers & picnic dining tables. Please note that if you choose to camp on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is definitely a good idea to get your Kauai camping license before your arrival. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits on the internet and also in person in the designated office.
If you opt to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Up-front, the charges are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are money orders & cashier’s checks. But you don’t have to book your camping permits prior to your arrival. You could also get them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
How much time does it take to get the camping permits?
If you decide to stay at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to stay at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to receive your permits. You might get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the various permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them on the spot.

Our Happy Clients!
Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.
Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time
Los Angeles, CA
Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.
We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
The BEST way to experience the beautiful garden island! Not only a great service–transportation doubling as your lodging–but wonderful and warm hosts. Jonathan and Jamie were so kind and helpful. An absolutely wonderful trip to Kauai–thank you both!
