Kauai Camping Guide & Specifics About Camping Permits
Can I head to any beach for camping?
You can drive up to any beach, nevertheless, you can only set up your camp in designated camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We will supply you with a list of the greatest places to visit and to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or can we just visit designated camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You may only camp in designated areas with a valid camping permit. The charge is roughly $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county parks, but private campgrounds could be a little more. One particular advantage of these camping grounds is that you will have complete access to facilities, such as showers, restrooms & picnic kitchen tables. Please remember that if you opt to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It’s a good idea to get your Kauai camping license before your arrival. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses online and also in person in the designated office.
If you choose to camp at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
Non-residents have to pay three dollars per night beforehand. Payment methods accepted with this application are cashier’s checks and money orders. But you don’t have to book your camping permits prior to your arrival. You may also obtain them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
How long does it take to obtain the camping permits?
If you decide to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite some time to obtain your permits. You may opt to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will get them immediately.
